Fungal Nail Infection

What is a fungal infection?

Fungal nail infection, also known as Onchomycosis and/or Tinea Unguium, is a fungal infection of the skin beneath your nail (nail bed) that causes visual and physical changes to the actual nail (nail plate). People recognise it by its distinctive discolouration which can be anything from white, through to yellow, brown or even black.

What causes it?
Typically caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes, but sometimes non-dermatophyte fungi such as candida can cause a fungal nail infection.

The causation organisms are found naturally on our skin, but infection occurs when, for one reason or another, these organisms colonise and then infect tissue. Most commonly, nail fungus occurs secondary to skin fungus of the foot (Tinea Pedis or more commonly known Athlete’s foot) which is characterised by red, itchy, dry and flaky patches of skin. It is important that you get your feet checked for fungal skin infections when there is suspected fungal nail infection.

How do we treat it?
Fungal nail infection is typically difficult to treat, as the nail plate acts as a physical barrier to where the infection is rife (under the nail). There are however, some remedies that are proven to be effective.

Message the clinic to book your appointment to have a chat about your concerns and we can talk through your options.

The treatment option best suited to you will be based upon the clinical presentation, the history of the problem, your medical history and your personal decision.

The above pictures were taken less than 12 months apart. This patient came to Penrith Foot
Health with fungal nails after a leg injury. During their initial appointment we decided upon a
treatment plan, and less than 12 months later their nails were fungal free. Unfortunately we forgot
to take the final after picture!

Here at Penrith Foot Health, we are also able to offer the Lacuna Method™

The Lacuna Method™ offers a cutting-edge yet straightforward solution for fungal nail infections. This technique involves painlessly drilling micro-holes into the damaged nail, creating small channels that allow an anti-fungal agent to penetrate directly to the infected skin beneath the nail. Patients then continue treatment at home by applying the prescribed antifungal fungal medication daily. Over time, this supports healthy nail growth as the infection is gradually eradicated.

We understand that some patient find their fungal nails and/or the health of their skin embarrassing, but rest assured, we are here and happy to help. Please do not hesitate to get in touch.
